The Next Generations of Mobile Communications:
Advanced Technologies and Research Collaboration Networking
Over the last four decades, mobile communications has continued to grow at a marvelous rate from the 1st generation (1G) to the 4th generation (4G) with significant contributions and impacts to the global economy development. The next mobile communications generations (5G and beyond) will facilitate the development of countries toward a smart society model based on internet of things (IoT) infrastrutures. In many developed countries, research organizations/universities and enterprises have been establishing numerous effective R&D collaborations to develop 5G technologies for their commercialization by 2020. In Vietnam, collaborations between universities and enterprises in the area of mobile communications are still limited.
To develop productive collaboration networks of overseas and domestic universities/enterprises in mobile communications industry, the University of Danang invited internationally prestigious experts in communications industry to (i) conduct training workshops on advanced technologies of future mobile communications and (ii) develop R&D collaboration networks. In particular, the University of Danang and invited prestigious experts organize four training workshops with the following agenda.

C. Expert Biography
Prof. Tho Le-Ngoc
Tho Le-Ngoc obtained his B.Eng. (with Distinction) in Electrical Engineering in 1976, his M.Eng. in Microprocessor Applications in 1978 from McGill University, Montreal, and his Ph.D. in Digital Communications 1983 from the University of Ottawa, Canada.
During 1977-1982, he was with Spar Aerospace Limited as a Design Engineer and then a Senior Design Engineer, involved in the development and design of the microprocessor-based controller of Canadarm (of the Space Shuttle), and SCPC/FM, SCPC/PSK, TDMA satellite communications systems.
During 1982-1985, he was an Engineering Manager of the Radio Group in the Department of Development Engineering of SRTelecom Inc., developed the new point-to-multipoint DA-TDMA/TDM Subscriber Radio System SR500. He was the System Architect of this first digital point-to-multipoint wireless TDMA system.
During 1985-2000, he was a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of Concordia University. Since 2000, he has been a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of McGill University. His research interest is in the area of broadband access communications.
Since 2004, he has been Scientific Director of the Center for Advanced Systems and Technologies in Communications (SYTACom), including 5 universities in Quebec.
He is a Senior Member of the Ordre des Ingénieur du Quebec, a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC), the Canadian Academy of Engineering
(CAE), and the Royal Society of Canada (RSC).
He is a recipient of the 2004 Canadian Award in Telecommunications Research, the IEEE Canada Fessenden Award 2005, the 2013 Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, and the 2014 Award for Best Collaboration with Huawei Wireless.
He holds a Canada Research Chair (Tier I) on Broadband Access Communications.
He is a theme leader and/or project leader in three interdisciplinary NSERC Strategic Research Networks: Healthcare Support through Information Technology Enhancement (hSITE), NSERC Smart Microgrid Network (NSMG-Net), and Smart Applications on Virtual Infrastructure (SAVI).
Since 1985, he has been a consultant, Technical Advisor, Chief Architect, Chief Scientist to several companies in communications.
Prof. Duy Trong Ngo
Duy Trong Ngo received the B.Eng. (with First-class Honours and University Medal) degree in telecommunication engineering from The University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia in 2007, the M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering (communication) from University of Alberta, Canada in 2009, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from McGill University, Canada in 2013.
Dr. Ngo is currently a Senior Lecturer (equivalent to Associate Professor in the U.S. and Canada) with the School of Electrical Engineering and Computing, The University of Newcastle, Australia. He leads a research team that works on some most active areas of the fifth-generation (5G) wireless networks, including cloud radio access networks, mobile edge computing, simultaneous wireless information and power transfer, and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications for intelligent transportation systems.
In 2007, he was an awarded the University Medal in Telecommunications – the highest honour bestowed upon an undergraduate by The University of New South Wales. In 2013, he was awarded two prestigious Postdoctoral Fellowships by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the Fonds de recherche du Quebec – Nature et technologies. At The University of Newcastle, he received the 2015 Vice-Chancellor's Award for Research and Innovation Excellence, the 2015 Pro Vice-Chancellor's Award for Research Excellence, and the 2017 Pro Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence in the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment.
